Minor pieces can seem insignificant in a lot of queen endgames, since a queen and minor piece usually cannot deliver a mating attack consisting purely of checks. Many queen endgames are drawn despite one side having an extra minor piece. (Queen + Bishop vs. Queen.... and Queen + Knight vs. Queen are general draws) but sometimes when the opponent's queen is vulnerable to tactics, then the tactical influence of the minor piece is just enough to pull off a win. |
